Laptop for uni!! - Duckman - 06-14-2009 11:05

Ok I'm starting University (we just call it Uni) half way through September, which means moving 150 km away from home, right into the middle of Glasgow (huge city). So I'm hoping to keep playing th3 to some degree there, but it could be a little weird on a laptop, does anyone here use one?

One thing I don't have a clue about is the size of the thing, the standard seems to be 15.6" screens, but the keyboard layout is a bit weird, if I got a 17" screen then the layout is a bit more normal (and would mean that I wouldn't have to re-learn controls). Watching films would be better on a bigger, higher def screen, but 17" is fucking huge Tongue, so moving it about the place could be interesting. I have a laptop case but I don't think it fits 17" laptops Tongue.

Right now I'm thinking either of these 3, I'm going completely Dell, because every one I've sampled seems pretty flawless (apart from the fact they all had Vista Mad, I'm gonna get XP/Windows 7)

Dell Studio 15 (£479 Base Cost)

Opinions and advice would be greatly appreciated Laugh

Re: Laptop for uni!! - slappy - 06-14-2009 11:16

i mean i used to play on a laptop and ehm id say if u use the numpad for anything get the middle offer and if u dont use numpads things get the other 2 so i would sugest middle offer
Good side os it:
1.screen is bigger
2.better keyboard ley out+numpad
(sombrero)

Crap site of it:
1.the screen is a lil big so it might hurt ur eyes because u are too close over the keyboard and screen is large

A lil other sugestion:
i had a friend he got a laptop but the keyboard was like in 15'' offer so he went to a shop and got a keyboard as u can see u most of the times u have a keyboard plug Laugh so u can connect it and problem solved with the keyboardOriginal

I'd go for a laptop with highest performance and then buy a monitor+kb+mouse. That's whats works best, and if you don't feel like plugging in everything all the time, use a dockingstation, this way you have the normal computer feel at your room, and you can take your laptop to the lessons. Playing etc on a laptop is far from comfortable.

Yeah, I'm definitely taking a mouse, speakers and webcam/mic to uni. I should think about just buying a keyboard as well, the laptops must have ports for external keyboards.

Most keyboards have USB connectors atm else you can buy a PS2 to USB adapter for like 5 euros

Perfecto. This one looks cheap and decent:

USB too (Inspirons don't have PS/2)

Make sure your keyboard handles more than 3 buttons at once.

Get Dell Studio 15 (£479 Base Cost) and buy usb keyboard. This studio 15 is by far the best laptop of these 3. If you want to play new games on your laptop do NOT get integrated video card! I think that ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570 is intregrated, but is much better than any Intel card. 17" screen seems to be good , but the whole laptop is quite big. IMO 15" is fine.

BTW I'm not sure, but as far as I know 32 bit Vista can't use more than 3GB of RAM. You will probably need 64 bit system. Ask some expert about this.

I say: Dell Studio 17 Laptop

Because..; It's small and compact, so easy to set up anywhere :] It has got 2 usb ports, a wifi on/off switcher so if I was you I buy Dell Studio 17 Laptop.
